General dermatology encompasses preventive and therapeutic treatments for a wide range of skin, hair, and nail conditions, including:
- Moles – These skin growths are generally harmless, though some people choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons. Even more importantly, skin cancer can have a very similar appearance to that of a mole, so it is important to have any new or suspicious growths checked.
- Atopic dermatitis (Eczema) – This is a common childhood condition, which can continue through life. It is characterized by dry, itching skin, often becoming worse in the winter.
- Acne – A common skin condition, especially among teens and adult women, acne can cause discomfort, embarrassment, and possibly even scarring if not treated.
- Rosacea – This condition, sometimes confused with acne, can cause facial redness, breakouts, thickening skin, and other symptoms.
- Psoriasis – An autoimmune disease, psoriasis can cause several types of skin lesions, most commonly silver or whitish plaques. It may also be accompanied by joint pain and limited mobility.
- Skin tags and warts – These are benign skin growths, which may be removed for cosmetic reasons.
- Warts – These growths or clusters of growths are caused by the HPV virus, and are treatable.
- Fungus of the nails – Both fingernails and toenails are susceptible to fungal infections, which often cause discoloration or thickening of the nail.
- Skin cancer – There are several types of skin cancer, with melanoma being the deadliest. Any skin cancer, like other cancers, should be treated immediately by a qualified medical professional.
- Acne scars and other scars – Although it may not be possible to remove some scars entirely, almost any scar can be revised to become unnoticeable or much less noticeable.
